Centipedes are aggressive creatures in Darkwood. They ambush the Protagonist by burrowing themselves into holes that normally contain Meat and Odd Meat around the Swamp, and emerge if approached. If attacking during the night, a hole may appear in a room of the Hideout and the centipede will emerge shortly after.

The Centipede has a twisted, humanoid appearance: it appears to be a large centipede or earwig-like bug creature burrowing inside a human body. The parasite replaces its head, and its tail protrudes from the body's left shoulder. This "arm" has a pincer at the end that the creature attacks with. When a Centipede is killed, the bug inside the body abandons its host and digs away to safety, while the human corpse is left behind and can be looted. If killed in water, the bug dies with the corpse, as it has nowhere to go.

Attacks[]

Centipedes are very aggressive and have a variety of attacks, some of which can target the Protagonist from long range:

  • The Centipede attacks with its pincer. This is a fast attack that causes 24 damage and can easily stunlock a player trapped in close environments.
  • The Centipede charges towards the player, two huge pincers coming out of its chest, snapping twice and dealing 24 damage per hit.
  • The Centipede burrows underground and does a very fast dash toward the Protagonist, coming out of the ground right below him.
  • The Centipede buries itself under the ground, often after taking ranged damage, and attempts to throw off the Protagonist by digging its way out elsewhere.

Strategy[]

A Centipede's hole has bugs crawling around and the player can hear them making a distinctive noise.

The player can throw a Molotov Cocktail onto the hole and the Centipede will die almost instantly.

During night in the Swamp Hideout, a Centipede's hole may appears with a short sound of soil being moved. A Centipede will appear shortly after that. There is enough time to charge up a melee attack or aim a firearm to kill it or at least heavily damage it before it engages in combat.

Centipedes are fast and aggressive, it can kill the Protagonist in a combo of attacks if not dodged in time. Using melee can be difficult noting that they can burrow before reaching melee range of the weapon. It is far better to use a firearm.

A single shot from the Hunting Rifle or any kind of shotgun will kill it. The Pistol is also an effective weapon, dispatching a Centipede in three shot. When using Pistol, it is advised to hold position and scan for the Centipede and quickly shoot it before it attacks (like playing a 'Whac-A-Mole').

Centipedes are capable of vaulting, and will attack barricades on their path despite being able to dig directly into hideouts.

Trivia[]

  • They have been nerfed in the console version.
  • Prior to Alpha 9.0 (+hotfix), Centipedes could sneak into the hideout during calm nights and attack players during the Time Freeze. As such, players who use older builds should remain alert for a distinctive growling sound, and avoid trading with The Three before clearing out all possible threats.
  • The player may encounter a body while exploring the swamp, which interacted with will prompt an observation that insects have been scattered over his face and a dead centipede has been draped across his nose. This is likely how the monster is created.
