Elk are aggressive creatures in Darkwood.

They are sometimes found at the Dry Meadow and Silent Forest biomes.

It is required to be cautious when approaching an Elk at the beginning of the game, as they are tough to kill with early game equipment, and will charge at the player almost on sight.

Upon death, they drop an Antler.

Strategy

One of the best strategies to deal with Elks in an early stage of the game is to bait them into a Bear Trap and them beat them to death with a damage-upgraded Board With Nails. If executed correctly, they will drop dead at the same time they manage to escape the trap.

It's relatively easy to dispatch it with just a board of nails, but it requires both damage and durability upgrades. Later on, the Shovel and the Axe make short work of Elk, especially with the Sharpened upgrade.

To kill an Elk, approach it ideally from behind until it rotates toward you, then begin running in a tight circle with it following you until you hear Elk charging. By circle-running, the charge will always miss. In this moment rotate towards the Elk and walk (restoring stamina) while holding board up to deliver just one blow. Then immediately turn around and start circle-running again. A dozen of hits are required to kill it. Alternatively, by hugging (staying very close to) the head of the Elk while rotating along with it, it may not charge at all. This can allow multiple hits being delivered until its death while dodging its close melee attack.
