Gasoline is an important resource used to fuel Generators and Table Saws, craft Lanterns, Molotov Cocktails, Exploding Barrels and Torches, and produce fire.

Quantity[]

Unlike most other items, a Gasoline item has a durability that represents the amount of fuel it has.

A full tank of Gasoline can be expressed in:

  • Decimal: 1.00 of Gasoline (officially displayed in game in crafting recipes requiring Gasoline)
  • Price: 35 Reputations for selling, 70 Reputations for buying (used when considering economics)
  • Fuel unit: 200 fuel units (for any other uses, including fueling)

Uses[]

Crafting[]

Fueling[]

When equipped, holding the right mouse button readies the Gasoline tank, while holding the left mouse button pours the Gasoline onto the ground or as fuel into a Generator or Table Saw. The action will stop consuming Gasoline once the machine is full so there is no worry of overflowing.

  • Generator: Turning on Generator for a night cost roughly 80 fuel units. A full tank of Gasoline is more than needed to keep the Generator running for two nights.
  • Table Saw: It takes 25 fuel units to saw a Wood Log (into 3 Boards).

Ignition[]

Gasoline can be ignited with Matchsticks, Torches, Flares or explosions from Explosive Barrels or Gas Tanks. Fire produced by igniting Gasoline on the ground only lasts for 20 seconds regardless of how much fuel is being used (trail or puddle of Gasoline).

Gasoline can be used to burn away Worms as well as kill Huge Bugs when they hide in holes.

Gasoline is also effective as a trap: Pour a small pool of Gasoline on the ground, lure the enemy over it, and light it up with Matchsticks or Torches for major fire damage. There are simple strategies to use this effectively:

  • Against carnivores, set out some Meat to lure them into the Gasoline and set off the fire. A Bear Trap would make this easier and safer, but also more expensive.
  • Against foes that will force their way in, pour a line of Gasoline through a doorway or window to a pool just outside, then barricade it. When they come knocking, just light the Gasoline from your side.
  • Against foes with a lunging/charging attack, just position yourself between the foe and flame, and sidestep the attack; if timed right, they should crash right into it. This is a good way to take down Elk in the early game.

Notes[]

  • Gasoline can be combined.
  • Gasoline can be reliably bought by the vendors at every dawn in any hideout. The Trader and The Three will have 2 tanks of Gasoline in stock, each costing 40-70 Reputation depending on the amount it has.
  • In terms of pricing, Gasoline costs 70 reputation per 200 units, so 0.35 per unit for buying and 0.175 per unit for selling. This means roughly every 6 units of fuel is worth 1 Reputation for selling.

Trivia[]

  • Lit Gasoline used to be somewhat overpowered, as even a tiny droplet would last quite a while, and foes could be easily lured into walking straight through the flames, often killing themselves without the player having to do anything else. Now it requires at least 20 fuel units (enough to form a puddle) to set something on fire, and enemies will generally avoid an already lit flame.
  • Before Beta 3.1's text makeover, this item's description used to be "Highly combustible, used to fuel generators."
  • Gasoline stains have a colourful shine to them, one that can easily be seen on oil stains in real life (due to a combination of refractions, total internal reflections and interferences).
