Hanuska is a minor character in Darkwood that can be found in the Village. She is a wife and mother, grieving after the death of her husband and child which was caused by the Villagers.

Hanuska is an older woman. She can be found sitting in a chair in the ruins of her house. Initially, she does not respond to the Protagonist's presence. Only after he leaves her behind, she will mutter:
There is a Burned Doll in a crate next to her.
Story[]
A piece of dialogue with the Chicken Lady reveals her name and backstory. Hanuska is a village woman who at some point gave birth to an 'abomination' of which "even them mongrels tucked their tails and yelped when they saw it". Following this event, the other villagers took Hanuska's child away, throwing it into the Village Well and burned down her house. Her husband died in the fire.
Her child can still be found inside the Well. It took form of the unique Small Red Chomper. It carries the Unburned Doll, which is an identical version of the Doll found in the crate located next to Hanuska.
When killed, Hanuska drops a Knife and a Cable. The implications are clear: Hanuska is the one who severed the cables at the Pig Shed, to punish other Villagers for what they did to her. Consequently, Hanuska is responsible for the Pig Farmer death, who was killed by the Sow, who could not be stunned for feeding, and is the reason that the Village is going through a famine.
When the Protagonist encounters her she also reveals that she would want the Sow dead, so that the Villagers starve. If the Protagonist killes the pig, she will dissapear from her house in the Village.
Trivia[]
- She was originally named "Hannah". In Polish, Hanuska is a pet form of the same name.
- Hanuska's backstory was added to the game before she made an in-game appearance. Only in later versions was her identity finally revealed. For a while, this had caused a lot of rampant speculation, with suggested theories being that Hanuska was the Chicken Lady, the Pretty Lady, or even a Janek's second sister.
