The Snout is a passive creature in Darkwood. It is a unique anomaly that acts like an interactive scenery and is only present in Chapter 2, though it plays a very minor role in the game's plotline. Completely harmless and only a visual hinderance by itself, the Snout's actual threat level is indicated by the surrounding more dangerous threats.

Whereabouts[]

The Snout can be found at the center of the storm in the Great lake of the Swamp, guarded by multiple dormant Red Chompers scattered nearby.

Appearance[]

It is what appears to be a pig-like snout jutting out of the ground, and appears to be the source of the storm at the Great lake. It is similar to other mutant growths that the forest attempts to grow.

When attacked in any way, it will shrivel up and die, and the storm will dissipate.

Stats[]

Like most passive creatures, the Snout is not built to directly inflict harm upon the player and is very fragile that a single attack by the player with any weapon will decapacitate it. It is also stationary in one spot, so the only real challenge of dealing with the Snout is to actually locate it while under the influence of the harsh weather condition that it inflicts upon its habitat.

Due to its inability to have any kinds of motions or reactions aside from shriveling up when attacked by the player, the Snout does not seem to display any characteristics of a typical creature other than its pig's snout-like appearance and thus may be considered more of a type of interactive scenery rather than an actual creature.

Loot[]

Upon death, the Snout just shrivels up and cannot be searched for loot.

Strategies[]

As the Great lake is home to some of the most dangerous creatures in the game, namely Red Chompers covered in Shadow Armor, so long as the Snout is still active and alive, traversing this location will prove extremely deadly thanks to the perpetual thunderstorm that completely shrouds the whole area in near pitch-black darkness and greatly reduces the player's field of view of the immediate surroundings even with the help of a light source. Therefore, it is best to locate and get rid of the Snout first if the player wishes to fully explore the lake without further unnecessary risks.

  • A light source such as the Lantern is mandatory to increase the visibility and deal with Shadow Armor covered enemies.
  • It is recommended that the player should carry a firearm, ideally a shotgun, to deal with any active Red Chompers that may ambush and pursue the player.
    • Dormant Red Chompers can be quickly dispatched with an Axe before rising up.
  • Since Red Chompers are a frequent occurrence in the Great lake, Odd meat salvaged from these enemies will be plentiful and may be consumed for that extra Armor protection and Endurance boost to give the player the edge in their travel.
  • It is best to take out any nearby dormant Red Chompers when approaching the Snout as they all have a chance to become hostile if the player damages the Snout.

Known bugs/glitches[]

  • If the player kills the Snout with a Molotov cocktail, the storm will not dissipate.[1] [FIXED in Darkwood 1.4 RC 21]
  • If the Snout takes damage from any sources other than a charged up Axe blow, it will only render the anomaly "damaged" and not killed, but the player will not be able to damage it again[unconfirmed].

Trivia[]

  • The Snout's existence is speculated to be the forest's attempt to copy the Sow with its frequent electrocutions, leading to the Snout being able to cause the thunderstorm around the Great lake.
    • Its appearance also somewhat resembles the Being's, although this is merely a visual speculation.

Version Changes
Darkwood 1.4 RC 21 fixed a bug that prevented the storm on a Great Lake from being cleared if Snout has been killed with Molotovs and Gas bottles
